What is ODF
- Orally Disintegrating Film(ODF) is a very thin film which is dissolved quickly and contains an active ingredient that is released on the tongue.
ODF provides an alternative to orally disintegrating tablets with modifications. These thin films are considered to be convenient to swallow,
self-administrable and fast dissolving dosage form, all of which make it as a versatile platform for drug delivery.
ODF is disintegrated within a few seconds, dissolved and releases medication for oromucosal absorption when placed on the tongue
or oral cavity. It rapidly disintegrates and dissolves to release the medicine for mucosal absorption or allows for oral gastrointestinal absorption
with quick-dissolving properties. When ODF is placed on the tongue, it is directly carried to the bloodstream.
ODFs are less friable and easy to carry dosage forms compared to other dosage forms such as tablet, capsule and syrup.
Hence, the development and substitution of drug dosage forms are required to make better change for patients. Advantages of ODFs include
improved portability, ease of administration, accurate dosing, and improved patients’ compliance.
